Picking up an occasion dress is the moment to turn a purchase or alteration into a complete, usable outfit. Before leaving with the garment bag, pause for the small handoff details: what is inside, how the closures work and which instructions belong with the dress.
This checklist works for a bridal gown, prom dress or mother-of-the-bride outfit. It does not assume every store offers the same services or that every dress has the same components. Use it to ask about your specific order while the person helping you can still answer.
Match the contents to your order
Bring the order information and any written alteration notes. Confirm the garment and the pieces you expect to collect. A detachable belt, straps, separate sleeves or an overskirt should be checked against your own order, not assumed to be included.
Look inside the bag together. If an item is arriving separately, ask for its actual status and the agreed next step. Record that information in a place you will find again.
Do the same with accessories being collected at the appointment. A dress and a separate order may have different pickup arrangements. One completed transaction does not tell you the other is ready.
Ask for a closure demonstration
Have unfamiliar fastenings explained before the dress goes away. If someone else will help you get dressed, include that person when practical, or ask permission to record the relevant demonstration.
Focus on the points you will actually use: the order of fastening, any detachable components and the reception arrangement if there is one. Avoid taking the gown apart simply to make a video. The specialist can show which actions are intended.
Write down anything easy to confuse. A brief note next to a clear photograph can be more useful than a long recording you cannot search quickly.
Keep the care advice with the garment

If a final try-on is part of the appointment, bring the items the provider has asked you to bring. Ask how to raise any concern you notice and resolve it through the provider’s actual process.
Keep receipts and written instructions together. Confirm contact details and relevant opening times if another conversation may be needed. There is no need to turn pickup into an adversarial inspection; a clear record helps everyone understand what has been completed.
Plan the trip home
Before lifting the bag, decide where it will go and who will handle it. Keep the area ready instead of clearing space while holding the dress. On arrival, follow the storage directions you were given and put the small detachable pieces where they can be found.
