Cufflinks for Prom: Check the Shirt Cuffs Before Choosing the Pair

Check cuff construction, cufflink fastenings and rental inclusions before choosing a pair for prom. Includes a practical compatibility card.

Before choosing cufflinks for prom, identify the shirt you will wear. The fastening has to work with that cuff. A silver finish or a personal motif can come later; neither helps if the shirt is designed to close with its own buttons.

Read the cuff description and look at the back

Charles Tyrwhitt’s formal-cuff guide describes its double cuffs as folded back and secured with cufflinks, and its single cuffs as button-fastened. Use that as a clear construction example. Do not assume that every shirt described as a single cuff accepts links, or that every seller uses identical terminology.

What the maker confirms What to do next
Buttoned cuff Use the intended buttons; cufflinks can be left out.
Double cuff intended for links Check the openings and the exact link fastening together.
Convertible cuff Ask the maker to explain the permitted fastening options for this shirt.
Description unclear Request a close-up and written clarification before buying links.

Do not cut holes, remove buttons or alter a rented shirt. A decorative cufflink photograph does not show how its fastening works. Ask for the reverse view and, where possible, a demonstration with the actual shirt.

Make a compatibility card

Try opening and closing the pair at a comfortable pace, following the item’s instructions. Decide whether you want someone to help and agree that before the evening. If the fastening catches or will not pass through normally, stop and ask the provider; forcing it is not a compatibility check.

Choose the visible detail after the fastening works

A quiet metal finish can repeat a watch or another accessory. A personal motif can be the small detail you enjoy noticing. Neither is compulsory, and the pair does not need to make every metal in the outfit identical. Compare it with the shirt and jacket in place so you see how much cuff is actually visible.

Check the bow-tie fastening as a separate practical decision. If you want another finishing detail, the pocket-square comparison comes after the shirt and closures work. Before leaving a rental provider, count the pair and ask what must return, in which container and by when. Keep the two links together when you take them off.
